Can I run a USB cord from my large speed modem to a second computer?

No. You obligation a router. You are only allowed one IP address, and if you run a USB from one comp to another you bring a conflict.

That probably is greek to you, simple answer is get a router. You can pick up a D-Link or Linksys for in the order of 30 bucks at most stores.
Simply put, No.
No. Modems generally singular support a single USB connection at a time.

Look into getting a modem / router near ethernet sockets instead.
USB is highly underpowered. If your USB cable is over 6 foot, forget it. Anything fancy that requires power, if the cable is longer than anything inpractical forget it. USB is great for keyboards and mice, anything else you are looking at something directly plugged into the USB slot, unfortunately.

To connect multiple computers to a single modem run a cat5 cable from the modem to a router next from the router you can run 2,4,8,16,32,64,etc cables out of it(depending on model) to that masses computers. You'd want to also run cat5 cables out of the modem. My guidance - go to a computer SUPER STORE, anything approaching bestbuy is going to ream you on price.
